My 'artistic' contribution to the marriage/civil union/what's it to you anyway debate.
I am thinking of taking up stenciling.
Two articles publishes in SX Magazine on the issue of politics:
Labor seem to be promoting themselves to the GLBTI community based solely on their past performances; while conveniently dismissing their support of the Federal Coalition Government's same-sex marriage ban as, and I paraphrase, 'we can't please everyone in the community'. I smell a cop out in favour of the religious right do you?
Sure, sure their track record is better than the Coalition but at the end of the day the lesser of two evils is not an option for me.
The solution put forward is the establishment of a Gay and Lesbian political party all our own. I am not particularly supportive of what will surely become a single agenda party nor have I been completely in favour of fighting for 'Gay Rights' as something removed from the broader issue of Human Rights. Crap, let me try and explain this with an example. There was an article recently about two sisters in the UK who were fighting to keep their home; the Civil Partnership Act, which gives same-sex couples rights equal to married couples does not cover the sisters who have actually lived together longer than many married couples. I believe the act SHOULD cover them. When 'my people' fight for rights we should be including those that our fight could also benefit otherwise it just perpetuates an 'us vs. them' attitude. Not a good thing.
Creating our own party would only fracture support further. Personally I vote for the Greens; despite my reluctance to vote for those who appear to be single issue, there's no option left to me after the demise of the Democrats. I WOULD support a combination of Greens / GLBTI / Human Rights type party... in fact, a true progressive, left wing party that's also for the workers (like Labor used to be) without sacrificing the environment and pandering to big business. One that supports the right of affordable education for all and equal rights for all, not just Gays and Lesbians; a party that supports a broad definition of FAMILY. Having said all that, there are a disturbing number of right wing homos out there so maybe a GLBTI party is better than no party? And 'my people' do love a party!
Too much politicking; I need a drink.
